Claire’s Campaign is Inn from the Cold’s annual matching campaign that runs throughout the month of May. Gary Nissen, long-time supporter of Inn from the Cold has committed to match donations up to $250,000 and Karen Zutter, Gary’s sister will match up to $100,000.

We are thrilled to announce that with only a few days left in May, an anonymous donor has stepped forward to match an additional $75,000. We are asking you to support us in reaching our new total campaign goal of $850,000. Funds raised through Claire’s Campaign will support the opening of Journey House 2 as well as the critical programming and operational needs for Journey House 1 and our Emergency Family Shelter.

Meet Fiona, mother of three and caregiver for her mother.

Journey House 1 & 2

Journey House 1 currently offers long-term housing to nine female-headed families, and has housed and assisted 25 families on their path to independence since 2015. This year, we plan to open a second Journey House which ten more families will be able to call home. Our goal is to help families heal from the traumas they have experienced, gain the skills and resilience they need to become independent and ensure the children who enter our doors have the best possible chance of a future free from poverty and homelessness.

Family homelessness in Calgary

Children and their families are the fastest growing demographic impacted by homelessness and typically spend twice as long in shelters than singles. In 2016, half of our guests were single mothers, with an overwhelming prevalence of children at 56%. According to the Calgary Homeless Foundation, there are approximately 200 homeless families in Calgary and in 2016, we had 33,034 bed stays in our Emergency Family Shelter.

The City of Calgary’s recent report on Housing Supply in Calgary underscores the need for an increase in the supply of affordable housing, with numbers in Calgary being only 3.6% as compared to the national average of 6%. Homeless families have unique needs which include larger units of 2 or more bedrooms, access to community resources and transportation and customized programming to meet their specific needs.
