Life is a long journey and as we navigate the winding roads, missteps can happen that take us in the wrong direction and have us suddenly facing a crisis. But a journey of a thousand miles begins always with a single step. Even the smallest actions are steps in the right direction which might mean you need to stop for directions and advice to get back on the right path.

That’s where Inn from the Cold comes in to step-up for families and children facing a housing crisis, providing them with the resources they need to find their footing through transitional times and continue their journey with confidence.

That’s why we are encouraging Calgarian’s everywhere to step-up and help end family homelessness this April.

On Sunday, April 24, join Inn from the Cold at the McHugh Bluff stairs in Crescent Heights for the 11th annual Steps to End Homelessness. After a two-year hiatus we are excited to welcome back this fun event held in memory of Suzanne West. We are challenging you to take that uphill climb on behalf of vulnerable families in need of support to get back on the path to housing independence.

We hope you will join us for this family-friendly challenge. After you complete your steps all participants will be able to join us for a BBQ and family fun carnival!

HOW TO GET STARTED

1. Recruit your team of friends and family to take the challenge with you. You can also take the challenge on your own.

2. Click the link below to register for the event and set up your team or individual fundraising page. Share your link for your squad to join.

3. Pick your challenge and pledge to make a difference to vulnerable families by choosing an impactful fundraising target.

4. Join us on April 24 to take on your steps challenge or complete your challenge on your own throughout the month of April.

ABOUT THE STEPS TO END HOMELESSNESS

Steps to End Homelessness was founded in 2009 by community advocate Suzanne West -- born out of her desire to change the world and her commitment to advocate for the less fortunate. Suzanne’s passion and determination to end child and family homelessness was contagious and tireless.

Steps to End Homelessness has been one of Inn from the Cold’s largest fundraising events. Now hosted by Inn from the Cold, the event is held in Suzanne’s memory, with donations matched by Power of One Foundation -- Suzanne’s charitable foundation now operated by her family.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there a cost to attend the event?
    • Registration for the event is free, but participants are asked to fundraise to support the event. There is no minimum fundraising requirement, but participants who raise over $250 will receive a t-shirt and swag bag. All donations will be matched by the Power of One Foundation.
  • What do I need to bring to the event?
    • Bring yourself, some water, comfy athletic shoes and weather appropriate clothing or a fun costume is encouraged!
  • What if it is raining on the day of the event?
    • We climb those stairs rain or shine! If weather is unfavorable on the day of the event, you are welcome to complete the challenge on your own on another day.
  • Will there be food provided?
    • There will be a BBQ generously provided by Spolumbos, it will be free to all event participants, and by donation for those that didn’t participate.
  • Will I have to sign a waiver?
    • Yes, we will need you to sign a waiver on the day of the event. Visit the check-in table when you arrive.
  • Is the event family-friendly?
    • Yes, the event is family-friendly. We will have a family fun carnival with some fun activities for you to take part in after the challenge.
  • How many steps do I need to complete?
    • It is completely up to you. We have some suggested challenge targets above that you can pledge to your supporters. But you are welcome to pick whatever number you are comfortable with!
  • Do I have to attend on the 24th?
    • If you can’t make it on the 24th, you are welcome to complete the challenge on your own. You can join our group “Inn from the Cold” on STRAVA to log your steps!
  • What kind of prizes are available?
    • We will have a fun prize pack available to be won for Top Individual Fundraiser, Top Team Fundraisers and Best Team Costumes
  • Do I have to wear a costume?
    • Costumes are not mandatory but highly encouraged! There are prizes to be won.
