A virtual interview with Sabrina – a longtime volunteer finds a new way to lend support.

By 19 April 2021News

Calgarians can now support families facing homeless at Inn from the Cold by using SkipTheDepot. People who use this service can get their beverage containers picked up at their home address anywhere in the Calgary region and have the proceeds donated to us on their behalf.

“It’s important to us at IFTC to provide options for people to support us and our mission,” says Tim McGowan, Capital Campaign Manager at Inn from the Cold. “We have had great success with bottle drive fundraisers in the past and this new partnership just makes it easier.”

The partnership is off to a great start we received our first donation of 99 bags of bottles. According to SkiptheDepot, this donation was one of the largest to a charity that it had ever received.

We interviewed Sabrina, a longtime Inn from the Cold volunteer, to find out more about this amazing donation.

When did you first become involved with Inn from the Cold?

Our family started off by volunteering through Big Rock Aikido.  Big Rock Aikido is a big supporter of community involvement and offers a discount on their fees for volunteering hours. As a group, we volunteered at Inn from the Cold doing the bagged lunches and dinner services.

What gave you the inspiration to do this bottle drive?

With lockdown volunteer opportunities have become harder to find. We were no longer able to help with lunches and dinner service, but we still wanted to stay involved with Inn from the Cold. When I learned that Inn from the Cold accepted bottles this seemed like a great opportunity to stay engaged.

How did you collect so many bottles?

I decided to put a notice on the Lake Bonavista community page with the Bottle Drive idea. I received an overwhelming amount of support!
