Help us erase family homelessness in Calgary

By 11 August 2017News

We are a CREB® Charitable Foundation Investing in HOPE grant finalist

On a national level, rates of family homelessness are increasing and at Inn from the Cold we continue to see more families through our doors. In 2016, we provided more than 33,000 emergency shelter bed stays to an average of 90 individuals each night, of which 56% were children. We have a bold vision of erasing family homelessness in Calgary and have been offering shelter, sanctuary and healing to assist homeless children and their families achieve independence for 20 years. We are committed to the expansion of affordable housing in our city, recognizing that it must be available if families are to exit homelessness.

We are seeking support for the expansion of our highly-successful Journey House (JH) supported housing model, which would open 10 three bedroom units for Calgary families experiencing housing crisis. Evidence shows that providing children and families supported housing leads to greater stability, stronger futures and more resilient children. JH uses an innovative 3-prong approach to case management for homeless families and focuses on two core program areas: Family Skills Training and Personal Health and Wellness. Both are augmented with supplementary programming to support the achievement of individual and family healing. We believe that through investment in affordable housing solutions such as JH, we can functionally end homelessness for Calgary families.
JH 2 increases our capacity to serve homeless families and we expect that over the next two years, approximately 20 families (70 individuals) will call JH 2 home. Through program supports, these families will build the skills: financial, parenting, and household management, to reach independence. $125,000 would cover the cost of renovations of the 1st floor of JH 2 which includes two family units, the Family Resource Centre and office space and common laundry facilities. The 1st floor would be named The CREB Floor of HOPE. Thank you for helping us erase family homelessness in Calgary.
