Circles of Hope, Presentation:

Marilyn Dyck, Founder and Executive Director of The Doorway:
'Are we asking the Right Questions?'

"Amartye Sen, Harvard Economist, awarded 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics, has suggested in his book Freedom as Development, that POVERTY IS NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY but about access to options. The street is a culture, and the task of moving off the street is cross cultural learning. It is a human process. Choices for change require access to options.  Cultural exchange involves both cultures and needs the engagement of both to succeed. Social exclusion will continue to be operative in the dynamic of exiting street culture and poverty until diverse perspectives find common ground to discover how to learn from each other."

Volunteer Spotlight

This week we are excited to feature one of our amazing volunteers Gwen Nordick (above). Gwen recently volunteered to manage the silent auction and coordination of donations for our DreamINN Big! Gala. Meet Gwen:

1.    How long have you been volunteering with Inn from the Cold?

I started volunteering in November of 2016, assisting with office tasks. In the Spring, I started coordinating donations for the DreamINN Big! Gala

2.       What is your favourite part about volunteering with the Inn?

My favourite part about volunteering with the Inn is the people. I have enjoyed meeting the children and families that benefit from your resources. As a Gala volunteer, I have also valued my time with the Inn staff, other volunteers, donors and Gala attendees.

3.       What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I golf, garden and have been doing yoga for 17 years with my sister. My family is very important to me, and travel whenever I get the chance. I have been a volunteer for most of my life, and am back at it with the Inn.

4.       Any last thoughts?

I celebrated my 70th birthday this year at the DreamINN Big! Gala, and must say it was the most fantastic celebration that I have ever been to. I am honoured to help out, and found it very fun to get to interact with the Gala participants. What a party!

Thank you Gwen. Find out more about Inn from the Cold volunteer opportunities here.
