INNformation Report Series: Focus on Indigenous Homelessness

This month, the INNformation Series has a special focus on Indigenous homelessness. The overrepresentation of Indigenous families in the populations we serve has us reaching out to community partners, experts, individuals with lived experience of homelessness, traditional knowledge keepers and Indigenous elders for their wisdom on how to provide the best care to Indigenous families.

In Canada, the results are alarming. According to the report, 1 in 128 people in the general urban population experience homelessness, but for Indigenous people in a similar setting, the rate is 1 in 15. Additionally, according to a 2016 Calgary Homeless Foundation report, Indigenous peoples make up 3% of Calgary’s general population but 20% experience homelessness.

We need to intervene and stop intergenerational trauma and family homelessness. This report specifically looks at reconciliation and the important role it plays in truly creating solutions for children and families experiencing homelessness.
