The realities facing families in Calgary
As the cost of living rises, essentials such as housing, food, utilities and transportation take up a growing share of household income. Scarce rental availability and rapidly rising rents make it increasingly difficult for families with limited or moderate incomes to find housing that is safe and affordable. These pressures are felt most acutely by single parent households, newcomers and families facing systemic barriers to employment and income security.
Systemic challenges that perpetuate poverty
Poverty is not caused by a lack of effort. It is reinforced by systems that do not adequately support families through periods of transition or hardship. Limited access to affordable childcare can restrict parents’ ability to work. Income supports often fall short of covering basic living costs. Without stable housing, it becomes even harder for families to build long term stability. Addressing poverty requires coordinated solutions that prioritize prevention, affordability and dignity.
Supporting families when it matters most
For nearly three decades, Inn from the Cold has supported families during their most uncertain moments. As Alberta’s only family-serving shelter, The Inn helps families move toward stability by empowering independence and fostering resilience, guided by the belief that every child and family deserves a safe and stable place to call home.
Because it is the only shelter of its kind in the province, Inn from the Cold is enhancing its crisis line to serve as a central access point for families in need. This expanded support will help ensure families can connect quickly with safe shelter, resources and guidance during moments of crisis, while strengthening coordinated access across the system.
Your role in creating change
While the statistics are sobering, there is hope. Over the past year, Inn from the Cold has helped hundreds of families transition from emergency shelter to permanent housing, providing not just a place to stay, but the tools and supports needed to thrive. The need continues to grow, and meaningful change requires collective action.
