Each night after tucking her daughter Maya into bed, Sofia worried about where they would sleep next. Having to move from place to place with no home of their own, Sofia and her daughter came to Inn from the Cold, uncertain and searching for a safe, stable place to call home.
Sofia worked alongside Inn from the Cold’s team of family support workers to find stable housing and was encouraged to return to school and complete her diploma.
“There were many times I thought I couldn’t do it,” Sofia said, “but knowing my daughter was safe and warm gave me the strength to keep going.”
Because of the generosity of our community, Sofia was provided the support to start over. Now, she and Maya get to celebrate the holidays in a warm, stable home to call their own.

What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is a global movement of generosity that takes place each year. Created as a response to the consumer-focused Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday encourages people to give back to their communities and support causes they care about. Since its launch in 2012, the movement has inspired millions of people worldwide to donate, volunteer, and make a difference. It’s a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good—and this year, that day is December 2nd.

How your Support can Change a Family’s Life this Giving Tuesday
By supporting Inn from the Cold, you are directly helping families on their path to stability. The Inn provides a variety of programs and services, such as emergency family shelter, prevention and diversion, supportive housing, and affordable housing. All of these programs aim to meet families where they’re at in their housing journey, and we tailor supports according to each family’s unique needs.
And the results of these programs are nothing short of incredible:
- 98% of families who accessed shelter said they were still housed at the time of completing their follow-up survey. This speaks to the family’s ability to both secure and maintain housing over time and maintain good community relationships.
- 100% of families who accessed prevention and diversion supports avoided entering the homeless shelter system, avoiding further stress and destabilization just by providing a family with one-time financial assistance
- 97% of families in our affordable housing programs said they felt safe where they live, helping them build lasting connections in their communities and feel comfortable in their own environment.
