First outbreak declared at main building

An employee working at our main building on 11th Avenue tested positive for COVID-19 on January 11th, bringing our total active cases to two. These two employees haven’t interacted with each other in person or with any families supported by IFTC. Both individuals are self-isolating.

This week Alberta Health Services determined Inn from the Cold has outbreak status once it was confirmed that the second COVID-19 case was contagious while working at our main facility.

Inn from the Cold follows the latest COVID-19 protocols and collaborates regularly with Alberta Health Services and other partners to share learnings, best practices, and resources as appropriate. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have focused on the health and wellbeing of the people at IFTC. Their health and wellbeing remains our top priority.

We had no outbreaks of the virus at any of our facilities in 2020, and to date there have been no cases of COVID-19 among the families we support at our emergency shelter.

Families that face a housing crisis and need support

Inn from the Cold is accepting families that require emergency shelter.

Our pandemic emergency operations include:

  • To enable physical distancing, families live temporarily in apartments at our satellite operations, where we can safely accommodate 10 families
  • Families stay in the communal emergency shelter at our downtown location only if space is available; our current capacity is set at two families to ensure physical distancing
  • Our offsite commercial kitchen provides daily hot meals, lunches and snacks to these families as well as household supply hampers to families residing in the community

Families are also equipped with their own computers to support home schooling as needed, job searching, and home hunting. IFTC case managers connect with the families regularly, providing guidance and helping to develop and adjust plans to get the families back on their feet and their children the support they need. IFTC also provides early childhood development and parenting supports, health and wellness programming, and home-finding service.

Families that need assistance can call 403 263 8384 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or email info@innfromthecold.org for more information. Email is best for non-emergencies and are returned within 24 hours.

Inn from the Cold implemented these emergency shelter operations shortly after the pandemic was declared in March 2020. To date there have been no COVID-19 positive cases among the families staying in our downtown communal emergency shelter.
