Inn from the Cold is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Siksika Nation on September 19, 2024. This partnership marks an important step towards creating meaningful relationships and improving access to shelter, housing opportunities, and urban cultural spaces for members of the Siksika Nation.
The Significance of the MOU
The MOU is more than a formal agreement—it represents a shared vision of collaboration and mutual respect between Inn from the Cold and Siksika Nation. Together, we aim to create a supportive environment that respects Indigenous culture, addresses the unique needs of Siksika Nation members, and ensures that every family has a safe place to call home.
By working closely with the Siksika Support Centre, we will enhance our ability to provide tailored support, including:
- Improved Access to Shelter and Housing Opportunities: This partnership will help bridge gaps in services and ensure that Siksika Nation families have access to safe, culturally informed shelter and housing solutions.
- Affordable Housing Pathways: By aligning our resources and expertise, we will work towards increasing access to affordable housing options for Siksika Nation members, supporting families in finding long-term stability.
- Urban Cultural Spaces: The partnership will create urban spaces where Siksika Nation members can connect with their culture, fostering a sense of belonging and community in Calgary.
A Step Towards Reconciliation
At Inn from the Cold, we understand that reconciliation is an ongoing journey that requires active listening, respect, and a commitment to change. This MOU is a testament to our dedication to advancing truth and reconciliation by building strong, respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities. We are committed to learning from Siksika Nation’s leadership and ensuring that our programs reflect the values, traditions, and needs of the families we serve.
Heather Morley, CEO of Inn from the Cold, shared her thoughts on the importance of this partnership:
“This MOU represents more than just a commitment on paper—it is a promise to Siksika Nation members that we will work hand in hand to create culturally safe, supportive spaces where families can thrive. We are deeply honoured to partner with Siksika Nation, and we look forward to learning from their wisdom and working together towards a future where Indigenous families are supported, respected, and empowered.”
What This Means for Indigenous Families
For many Indigenous families, the journey to finding safe and stable housing is often compounded by systemic barriers, historical trauma, and a lack of culturally appropriate resources. This partnership with Siksika Nation is an opportunity to address these challenges head-on. By working together, we can provide culturally relevant support, reduce housing instability, and empower families to thrive.
Kaah’ka’nooh’ki’toopi – Early Morning Rider, Richard Sparvier, Tribal Manager, emphasized the significance of this partnership:
“This MOU reflects our shared commitment to fostering safe, supportive environments that honour the dignity, culture, and well-being of all families. Together, we strive to integrate traditional values, cultural knowledge, and community-led solutions to provide a holistic approach to shelter and care, ensuring that every family receives the support they need to thrive. By building on the strengths of both our organizations, we aim to create a lasting, positive impact for present and future families of Siksika Nation.”
Looking Ahead
The signing of the MOU is just the beginning. We are excited about the possibilities this partnership brings and are committed to fostering an environment where Indigenous families feel supported, respected, and heard. This collaboration will serve as a model of what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared purpose.
We look forward to continuing our journey with Siksika Nation, building on the foundation of trust and collaboration established through this MOU. Together, we are creating a community where every family, regardless of background, has the opportunity to find stability and hope.
