Thanksgiving is often a time to reflect on what we’re grateful for. We gather around tables with family and friends, share meals, reconnect and celebrate the people who make our lives richer.
But gratitude isn’t only about what we have. Sometimes, it’s about the people who help us through the moments when we don’t have enough.
Over the past several years, many Calgarians have felt the weight of rising costs. Housing, groceries, utilities and transportation continue to put pressure on household budgets. Across Alberta, almost one in three households experience food insecurity due to financial challenges.
Behind every statistic is a story. A parent asking for help while they get back on their feet. A grandparent helping with childcare so a family can make ends meet. A neighbour dropping off a meal. A community organization helping someone navigate a difficult season.
These stories remind us of something important: none of us are meant to do life alone.
There’s an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child. At Inn from the Cold, we see every day how it also takes a village to support a family through times of crisis.
For the families we serve, community can take many forms. It may be a relative offering a temporary place to stay. It may be a teacher ensuring a child feels safe and supported at school. It may be a donor, volunteer or staff member helping a family find stability and hope during a difficult chapter.
The truth is that every one of us will need our village at some point. Sometimes we’re the ones offering support. Sometimes we’re the ones receiving it. Both require courage. Both are acts of connection.
This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the community that surrounds Inn from the Cold. We’re grateful for the people who choose to help others, not because they have all the answers, but because they understand the power of showing up.
When we support one another, we create something stronger than any one person can build alone. We create a community where families know they belong, where children can thrive, and where asking for help is met with compassion rather than judgment.
That’s the spirit of Thanksgiving. Not simply giving. Not simply receiving. But recognizing that we’re all connected, and that when one person reaches out a hand, an entire community becomes stronger.
