With Claire’s Campaign currently underway, we want to show you the impact of your donations by introducing you to Aiyana, an incredible young mother who found support at The Inn.
When Aiyana was referred to Inn from the Cold, this young mother of a 6-year old daughter was expecting her second child. Earlier in the year her husband had died by suicide and her only support in the city came from his family, who had turned abusive and blamed her for his death. She had nowhere else to turn for support and found herself without a home for her and her daughter.
That’s when Aiyana found refuge at Inn from the Cold. The Inn staff quickly moved her from our shelter into our supportive housing program and helped her establish a safe and stable home for herself and her daughter. From the stability of a home, Aiyana was able to seek the medical care needed. However, the trauma and challenging events that led her to Inn from the Cold had created too much stress for her unborn child and the baby did not survive. Leaning on staff at The Inn, Aiyana was able to navigate the painful aftermath of her loss while also ensuring her daughter had the support she needed to thrive.
Aiyana began to recover physically and mentally and within 6 months, she was registered in college and started to regain the self-confidence needed to create a brighter future for her family. Months later, with the encouragement of staff, she was able to obtain permanent affordable housing, which enabled her to finish her college degree, find employment, and to build a loving, supportive home for her daughter.
