Today, on National Housing Day, we are reminded of a truth that guides us every day at Inn from the Cold: housing is a human right. It’s not a privilege reserved for some—it’s a necessity for all.
A safe, stable home is the foundation for everything else in life: education, employment, health, and well-being. Yet, for too many families in Calgary and across Canada, housing is increasingly out of reach.
The Housing Crisis in Calgary
In 2024, Calgary faces a critical shortage of affordable housing. The rising cost of living, stagnant wages, and growing inequities have pushed more families to the brink of homelessness. Families with children—who are among the most vulnerable in our community—are the fastest-growing group experiencing housing instability.
We see this daily at Inn from the Cold. Families entering our shelter are not just seeking a roof over their heads; they are seeking stability, security, and a chance to rebuild.
Housing Is the Solution
It’s simple: housing ends homelessness. When families have access to affordable, appropriate housing, they gain the stability needed to thrive. Children can focus on school instead of worrying about where they will sleep. Parents can build brighter futures for their families.
But housing is more than just bricks and mortar. It is about dignity and opportunity. It is about ensuring that no family is left behind.
Advocacy for Action
National Housing Day is not just a moment to reflect but a call to act. To truly honour the right to housing, we must:
- Invest in Affordable Housing: Calgary needs more family-sized, affordable housing units to meet the growing demand.
- Address Systemic Barriers: Families need access to supports like affordable childcare, living wages, and transit to ensure they can sustain housing.
- Collaborate for Change: Governments, nonprofits, businesses, and communities must work together to tackle the housing crisis.
Be Part of the Solution
At Inn from the Cold, we’re committed to ensuring every family has a safe place to call home. But we can’t do it alone. We need your help to make housing a reality for all families.
- Donate: Your generosity helps us provide shelter, transitional housing, and critical supports for families in need.
- Advocate: Use your voice to champion affordable housing initiatives in your community. You can start by submitting a letter of support for Trellis’ Family Affordable Housing project in Bowness. Submit your comments here.

Housing Is Hope
Housing is more than a human right—it’s the foundation of hope, opportunity, and stability. On National Housing Day, and every day, let’s commit to making this right a reality for everyone.
Together, we can end family homelessness. Let’s ensure that every child and parent in our community has what they deserve: a place to call home.
